Lasallian Cub Scout Camp

From the 18th to 20th of December 2008, the Saint Joseph's Pelandok Scout Group Venture Unit facilitated the smooth running of the Lasallian Cub Scout Camp 2008 at Saint Joseph's Institution Junior (formerly known as Saint Michael's School).

Needless to say, both the cubs and their scout and venture mentors enjoyed themselves to the fullest!!

The 30 cubs came from both Saint Joseph's Institution Junior and De La Salle Primary School. This camp had a RED INDIAN theme so the 3 patrols were given 3 unique red indian names. Apache, Mohawk and Pawnee!

They learnt how to light and sustain a fire, build a trestle, pitch buffalo tents and played many games. And like last year we had lots and lots of soccer! (Next year we should have an inter-patrol soccer competition for them to get the grand trophy!!!)

Apache patrol (DLSPS) managed to win the champion trophy once again reigning defending champions till next year's camp....

All the cubs seemed to have enjoyed themselves in the camp and even the heavy rain could not put much of a damper on their spirits, although it literally put a damper on their tents, bags, clothes, shoes and scout uniform.

Photos will be uploaded by Nicholas soon enough...

SAC Guides

On the 6th and 8th November 2008, St. Joseph's Pelandok Scout Group Venture Unit organised an event to teach the SAC Guides about large scale pioneering. It was held on 2 days, and the guides did learn lots from those sessions.

From this event, I would like to thank the SAC guides for letting us have the honour in organising this event for them. We really learn lots too. Secondly, I would like to thank our VSL and AVSL, Ng June Ren and Marcus Png respectively for helping us along the way for this event. Lastly, I would like to thank all the ventures and anyone who came down to help in some way or another. Your presence does make a difference.

To end this post, I would like to remind the guides that they are invited(together with all the guides in their unit) to the NPC open house day on the 30th of November. Please remember to contact Adeline if you are interested. Furthermore, St. Joseph's Pelandok Scout Group Venture Unit will be organising a Night Hike in this December or coming January. So if you are interested, feel free to email us (Email address is on the blog), and we will be glad to let you join us and experience the fun being a venture.

Thanks, and May God Bless You Everyday

Hold your ground!
Hold your ground!
Sons of Gondor,
of Rohan,
my brothers,
I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me.
A day may come when the courage of men fails,
when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship,
but it is not this day.
An hour of wolves and shattered shields,
when the age of men comes crashing down, but it is not this day!
This day we fight!
By all that you hold dear on this good Earth,
I bid you stand,
Men of the West!

------

Hold your ground!

Hold your ground!

Sons of De La Salle,

of Pelandok,

my brothers,

I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me.

A day may come when the courage of men fails,

when we forsake our memorized script and lose all train of thought,

but it is not this day.

A half hour of presenting and shattered slides,

when the age of men comes crashing down, but it is not this day!

This day we present!

By all that you hold dear on this good Earth,

I bid you speak,

Men of Pelandok!

------

Hey guys all the best for the last phase of PW guys. For some in might be the case of "Rude am I in my speech, and little blessed with the soft phrase of peace." but let's just do our best and finish it.

The VENTURES never sleep.

Every night tenderfoots sleep, but the Ventures are wide awake.

Because History never sleeps.

Tradition never sleeps.

Glory never sleeps.

Honour never sleep.

Opportunities never sleep.

The World never sleeps.

That's why we work around the world.

That's why we work around the clock.

To turn tenderfoots into Scouts.

That's why the Ventures never sleep

Venture Night 2008

This year's Venture Night was held at the Trader's Hotel from 6.45pm to 11.00pm, continuing the tradition of all previous Venture Nights, which pack Scouty fun, laughter, celebration, passion, loyalty and great food in one night. The gathering of old boys, affiliates and various members of the scouting community made the event special as always.

Deviating from usual Venture Nights, this year's one featured more prominently a theme of regeneration and progression. It uniquely and significantly marked the change in command of VSL Malcolm Tan to AVSL June Ren, with Malcolm stepping up to the Rover Crew to become the RSL and June Ren taking his place as VSL. In addition, Yen Chee and Boon Leong also stood down from their roles as AVSLs temporarily. With 'new' blood, Marcus Png, Eric Chua and Desmond Ying taking on the roles of AVSLs.

With the 'new' and capable leaders coming to the fore, the future of the Venture Unit is looking as bright as ever and the new Exco looks forward to working with the leaders in tandem to bring the unit to greater heights. Also, there was the stepping up of our beloved J2s to the Rover Crew. We wish them all the best in their A levels and we will see you guys soon (in Rovers).

We would like to thank our leaders Malcolm Tan, Yen Chee and Boon Leong for guiding us through the course of this year. Though we might not have got to know you guys well relative to the J2s, your legacy and the many contributions you all have made is noted and much appreciated. We shall continue to keep in touch with you guys and we wish you all the best in your future endeavours.

With much said about the events that occured yesterday night, credit must go to the effort put in by IC and Assistant IC Matthew Lim and Aaron Chan respectively, in organising and coordinating this event and the effort put in by the other J1s and leaders who pitched in to help or advise when needed. We thank the leaders, affiliates, old boys, guests and all who were present to make this year's Venture Night a success. Most of all we would like to thank God for the safe and successful running of this dinner which went on without a hitch.

Venture Cord Hike July 25th-26th

On the 25th of July was the Venture Cord Hike in which both Geovenn and I participated in. We managed to finish the hike in relatively good time despite the fact it was our first attempt. The logs were submitted yesterday and surveying component is still in progress.

Our sincere thanks goes to our followers, Imran and Rovik, who endured the torrid and arduous journey following Geovenn and I respectively. The safe completion of this journey would not have been possible without the God's providence and protection throughout this hike, our families and Scout Group (leaders, alumni, ventures, scouts) for their guidance and unwavering support, the examiners’ (Mr. Alaric Leong, Mr. Leong Kai Xiang and others) who have made the effort to organize the hike for us and those who have helped in some way or another to make our participation and hopefully successful passing a reality.

Testimonials

Dear J2s, i'm betting on the fact that you'll check the zai venture blog within the next 2 weeks even though we are...

ROVERS!

Anyway, i'm proposing that we get our venture testimonials done by next week Saturday, 19th of July. Looking at the draft testimonials that we already have (emailed by ara), do a writeup for yourselves and then we'll all submit to Malcolm on the aforementioned Saturday for vetting and sprucing up.

I will collate a list of all the activities any of us did and post it here on the blog for reference. Please add on to the list whatever i may have missed.

But first... I need to know whether this proposal is viable.
So, what say you?! Fight for me and i will consider your oath fulfilled...

Stepping Up Ceremony 2008

The Stepping Up Ceremony on 5th July went on relatively well without a hitch (except the strangely jammed den door, which was unfortunately broken into). It was eventful and memorable as always, with the upswelling of emotion and back pats. The ventures congratulate the stepped up Sec 3s on their assisgned posts and wish them all the best in their future dealings with the unit.

To the Sec 4s, study hard for your O levels and we hope to see you guys back in Venturing soon.

In addition, the J1s would like to reiterate our thanks and appreciation to the J2s who have guided us and supported us in the ways open to them. We wish you guys all the best in the upcoming A levels and see you guys in Rovers soon.

Last but not least we would like to thank our venture leaders (including those to be and not to be); Malcolm, Yen Chee, June Ren, Boon Leong and Marcus; for their help and assistance throughout this year. We also wish our leaders (Mr Malcolm Tan, Mr Alphonsus Gregory, Marcus) who are attending the conference in Korea a safe and fruitful trip.

My fellow J1s let's live up to the various expectations laid on us, continuing with improved vigour to bring the venture unit to greater heights. See you guys soon.

P.S: Shannon its time to reliquish administrative privileges of the blog to Nicholas...

Important

Hi all,

Thought it was weird that no one has posted anything about tomorrow's major events at all. Please note that the Stepping-Up Ceremony for the batch 2008/2009 is tomorrow. At the same time, we would also be having the Stepping-Up of the JC1s into their new ExCo positions. Moreover, the Venture AGM is after the ceremony.

So please bring along your uniform with your Frank Sands Award badge sewn on and all J1s are to meet at 9 am for an outing and pressing matters.

Till then, just would like to thank the J2s for their leadership so far

Suggestions for new p.t. kit

As all of you know, the white dri-fit is running out of stock already.

You guys know what that means? We get to design a new one!

Yepps. C'mon, lets put our heads together.

Basically just design anything and share your ideas through email.

The only requirements is that people must be able to identify our unit.

Ventures, Pelandok, 04 are all so called key words lah.

To start things off I'll present one of my simpler ideas.

Basically I was thinking of jersey style, we print the numbers 04 at the back with the words VENTURES. For the front we could use the group logo or anything. White base, have maroon trimmings at the side or something. Of course the whole thing is dri-fit.

Maybe you guys can do better? Hope to hear from everyone. Yepps.

Cheers,
Shannon

[UPDATE]

No new design allowed. boo. haha anyway I'm sure there would not be any problems in making a third attire/jacket of sorts....?

Saturday 220308 activities

Okay ventures this is the schedule for this Saturday.

Some changes have been made. As mentioned by others before, the venue of the BBQ is now at Malcolm's place. Those not in the know, please ask around. The time is still at 6pm, tentatively.

Before that, I expect ventures to attend the After Action Review meeting of the campfire council. Its at 4pm, Malcolm's place but at the function room, 5th floor.

Before that (notice I'm backtracking? lol), since you guys have nothing to do, we'll stick to the plan of having fun at ECP, except now we have to return to Malcolm's place by 4pm for the campfire council meeting. Now, I need someone to I/C for the ECP side. Volunteer yourselves or shoot recommendations on the tagboard.

If the response is poor, we will cancel the ECP plan can do something else.

That's all for now, updates may be posted, so watch this space.

-Shannon

[Update]

Hi all
Once again please note that there has been a change of plans for this Saturday.
At Marcus' request, we have changed the BBQ venue to Malcolm's Place which is at Sherwood Towers.
We have decided not to head down to ECP on that day as it will be quite a rush.
Instead we will be spending the late morning and afternoon preparing for the BBQ which we are supposed to facilitate.
We are also all expected to attend the AAR of the campfire which is scheduled for 4pm.
As such we will need to spend a few hours before 4pm, preparing the food, drinks etc. for the evening.
I propose that we begin preparations at Malcolm's place at 1pm.
We could meet at 12pm for lunch at King Albert Park and then walk over to the apartments as a group.
Before that, i will need a few fellow J1s, together with me, to buy the stuff required (food, charcoal). preferably from the NTUC at Bukit Timah Plaza which is just the adjacent building to the apartments.
If no one wishes to volunteer for the shopping before the preparations, i will be appointing people to go with me. You all will be informed on Friday afternoon.
Tentatively we will meet at Bukit Timah Plaza at 1030am. (shopping group)
Whether or not we are using this BBQ for our home econs section, Rubegan will decide.
Sorry for the last minute changes.
I hope our moods are not dampened due to the fact that we no longer will be going to ECP

That's all for now peeps.

Aaron :)

Registration

Hey all. Please be reminded to complete your registration as a Venture by this Wednesday, 27th Feb 2008. Basically, once you're able to log into the SSA website, you're almost completely registered. The deduction of the subscription fee is automatic, so there's no need to worry about that. As for the approval (which you don't have to worry about also), the Venture leaders will approve your membership online and it'll be official: you'll then be a REGISTERED PELANDOK VENTURE. It's as easy as that. If you are still experiencing any technical difficulties, please contact Mr. Kwang asap. He'll help you to resolve all your problems. That's about it. Thanks and see you soon.

P.S. Thank you so much Mr. Kwang (:

SJI-GES Ventures Combined Activity

Hey peeps. As you all might already have heard (or read from the post below), we're having this combined activity with the GES Ventures this Saturday. Basically, we'll be going to Ubin and learn more about the survival component in our badge scheme via hands-on experience. So what you peeps can do beforehand is read up on survival-related stuff like natural shelter, fire lighting, backwoodsman cooking, animal traps, water collection methods etc. It'll do you real good on the day itself. Well, remember to bring along the necessary equipments as we'll be doing some trekking as well. It's up to your own discretion. Just a little advice: travel light. It helps a lot. Also, bring sufficient money for travelling and purchasing of food and drinks. Here are the other details:

Date : 16th February 2007
Time : 0830 hrs sharp
Place: Changi Jetty (at Changi Village)
Attire : Dri-fit Venture T-Shirt with black shorts and shoes (don't even try to bargain with me here)

Another very important thing to note is that we'll have to go down to SJI on Friday, 15h Feb 2007 for preparation and collection of equipments from the store. We'll meet there at 1500 hrs. Please dress appropriately as you'll be on school grounds on a school day. Be there if you can. Hope you all realise that the preparation is as important as the activity itself, if not more. So yep. See you peeps on Friday. Thanks.

An Introduction to the Venture Treasury

Hello everyone!

J1s pls read this...

Information about the venture treasury :)

1. The Venture Funds is kept by the Venture treasurer and is mainly used to purchase essentials to keep the venture unit running.

2. If you want to make a claim, approach me (ben) or ur future treasurer (nic, aft the seniors step down) and then fill up a reimbursement form and attach the receipt as proof or purchase. receipt is very impt cos if not then we don't know if u really bought it for that price or something like that.. basically for formalities la

3. venture subscription fees. I will be collecting venture subscription fees in the coming months after the membership is confirmed.

cost is $5 per month so means everyone pays $60.

venture subscription fees is the principle source of 'income' for our venture funds. basically this money will eventually be given back to you through all the subsidies and payment for the material u use and its just a convenient one off way to fund our activities. hope everyone understands :)

4. for those who haven't bought the venture t shirts, rmb to do so.. it's $20 for 2 shirts (one white and another polo)

yupp that's all i guess..

ben.

Night Hike!

Hello everyone!

Night hike was on the 18th to 19th of January! The plan was to walk from bishan to toa payoh, balestier, geylang and finally east coast park to watch the sunrise… Along the way as usual, stuff our faces with the famous food from 24-hour makan places!!

The participants were: Shannon( who left us halfway), Darren( who joined us halfway), Chao Hao, Geovenn, Aaron Chan, Matthew, Navin, Bertran, Ibrahim (who joined us halfway) and me, Rubegan. All of us had a lot of fun and enjoyed ourselves so much that the drizzle in the morning couldn’t put a “damper” on our mood… The photos are coming soon, latest by Monday. So Stay Tuned…

Venture community service

Hello ventures!

To all J2s: Hey we are going to do service at the SPCA Animal Shelter as a kennel helper cleaning cages.
Our commitment will be at least twice a month working the afternoon shift of 12.30-3.00 on saturdays for 2+ months. These months will hopefully be Feburary and March, maybe a bit of April.
Please print the signup form, fill in the details and pass to me by 31st January.
If have inquiries please ask, i'll be heading down to the SPCA shelter itself at the end of January and can try to clarify your doubts.
More info here: http://www.spca.org.sg/volunteer/type_volunteer.asp
Signup form here: http://www.spca.org.sg/volunteer/images/volunteerregistrationjun07.admin.frm.doc

To J1s: Feel free to join us! You'll be accomplishing the service section of the Venture Scout Standard. If interested, please follow the same instructions set for J2s above!

This is just a short term service project. Shannon has suggested that, with reference Marcus Png's email, we should have a long term service project which will stretch generations of scouts/ventures/rovers, and has proposed collaborating with St. Joseph's Home for the Aged. We'll talk more of this on a later date.

Thanks all!

YOURS IN SCOUTING SIA...
Darren

[Additional note]

I have updated the links section on the right-hand bar, please take a look as some information might be useful.

Cheers,

Shannon
